About the programme

The Natural Science foundation programme PROGRESS is created by UJOP Charles University experts in cooperation with university faculties. It is designed for you if you already possess B1 level Czech and wish to deepen your academic language skills and prepare for university studies in natural sciences and related fields in Czech at Czech universities.

 

The programme combines intensive Czech language preparation, academic subject tuition, and full support to help you successfully enter Czech higher education and adapt to life in Czechia.

What will you study?

To study natural sciences for free at Czech universities you need strong Czech language skills and a solid academic background.

The programme therefore combines advanced Czech language preparation with key academic subjects.

You will study:

  • Intensive Czech (general, academic, professional)
  • General and human biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics

All subjects of this Natural Science foundation programme PROGRESS are taught in Czech. Since students enter with B1 level Czech, teaching follows university expectations from the beginning and focuses on academic language, scientific terminology, and preparation for university admission.

Academic year structure

 
  • The programme starts in September.
  • Lessons take place every weekday from 8:30 to 15:30.
  • Students have 25 lessons per week, 900 lessons in total.
  • One lesson equals one academic hour (45 minutes).
  • Lessons include lectures, seminars, projects, and regular tests.
  • Students are expected to complete 10 hours of self-study per week, including homework, listening to Czech podcasts or radio, watching TV or films, reading, and speaking Czech.
  • Student orientation: Weeks 1–2: intensive Czech language lessons + an adaptation programme. From week 3: Czech language lessons + academic subjects.
  • The academic year is divided into three trimesters.
    • Each trimester has a different weekly timetable.
    • At the end of each trimester, students take tests in Czech and academic subjects to track their progress and prepare for university studies.
  • The study programme is flexible within certain limits. The lesson structure is adapted to the needs and progress of each student group.

Czech language outcomes

At the end of the programme, you will take a Czech language exam. Successful students will receive a certificate recognised by more than 80 faculties.

The Natural Science foundation programme PROGRESS is designed to help students progress from B1 to B2 Czech. Students' progress depends mainly on their motivation, regular study, language aptitude, and previous experience with learning foreign languages.

 

Entry requirements

Do you meet the entry requirements?

  • Completed high school before the start of the natural science foundation programme. (You may apply before graduation.)
  • Minimum Czech language level: B1.
  • If you do not already have a recognised B1 Czech certificate, your language level will be assessed by UJOP as part of the admission process before the programme starts.
  • No English language level is required.
  • Have a solid high-school foundation in relevant academic subjects in your native language. (See the list of topics here)
  • You must turn at least 17 years old by 31 December of the year you begin your studies at UJOP Charles University. Younger candidates are assessed individually.
