The Erasmus+ programme offers an opportunity for professional growth not only for students but also for university staff members. Recently, employees of five partner institutions took advantage of the unique opportunity to participate in the Practical English for Staff course, where they spent a week improving their communication skills in English.

Although temperatures are freezing outside and spring still seems far away, the summer semester of the 2023/2024 academic year has begun for more than 126 students from 40 different countries across six continents. Petra Landergott Kalvínská, head of the Prague study centre, greeted the students of Czech language courses at the Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies of Charles University.

It is the love of the Czech language and the intensive language course they took together in the winter semester that unites students from Vietnam, Korea, Thailand, Japan, Chile, Australia and America. For almost five months, more than 160 students from 36 countries from all over the world successfully worked on their language skills every day at the Voršilská study centre in the centre of Prague.

Hundreds of tourists stream down the castle steps to Klárov every day after visiting the most beautiful gem of Prague architecture, the Prague Castle. And it is right there that they arrive at the new jewel - Zenger's transformation station, which after reconstruction has been converted into a new cultural venue known as Kunsthalle Praha. It is no wonder that it has become the destination of excursions for students of art and architecture and raised the interest of students of humanities at the Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies of Charles University.

At noon, the Emmaus abbey Na Slovanech rang with the tones of classical and modern music. On Thursday, 7 December, the 29th musical matinee of the Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies (ÚJOP UK) took place.The concert featured talented, both current and former students of the preparatory and language courses. As diverse as the multinational mix of the performers was, so too was their repertoire, which ranged from works by J. S. Bach to ABBA.

The Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies (ÚJOP UK) organized a one-time opportunity to visit two medical faculties in Prague for students of preparatory programmes focused on medicine and pharmacy. The students interested in these prestigious studies had a chance to see the life at the oldest medical faculty of Charles University and its younger sister in Motol.

The doors open day at the Ladislav Sutnar faculty of design and art of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen proved to be an unforgettable experience for the students of the Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies of Charles University (ÚJOP UK). On 10 November 2023, dozens of people interested in bachelor's, master's and doctoral studies flocked to the faculty. They did not miss the unique opportunity to take a look inside more than twenty art studios and get acquainted with the environment and background of the spaces where design and art are taught.

There is snow outside the classroom windows, the entire country is paralyzed by ice, but not a single student is missing from the classroom. Everyone came to say goodbye to their favourite teacher. Kateřina Švehlová stands in front of the class and welcomes Ukrainian students to the last pre-Christmas lesson of the Czech language course. Her voice shakes a little with emotion, but once the interactive whiteboard lights up, her voice brightens and her professional tone is back.

Emmaus Monastery is an architectural jewel, in which history have been connected with Slavic culture for centuries. It is therefore no wonder that this unmistakable Prague landmark is where a musical matinee of Czech language students from the Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies is regularly held during Advent. This 28th year filled the monastery's refectory to capacity.

Half a year is the ideal time for gingerbread dough to mature. Does that seem like a long time? The teachers of Poděbrady study centre also teach students Czech realia, and they know very well that gingerbread dough for a wedding should ideally be made on the day of the bride's birth.
