In the ninth year of the translation and presentation competition, the translation category was dominated by students from the University of Zagreb, while in the presentation contest, students from Charles University had the upper hand once again. The competition took place as part of the International Conference of Foreign Students of Czech and was joined by a total of 53 students from 16 countries from all over the world

The Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies at Charles University offers scholarship students a wide range of benefits and opportunities in preparation for a successful start of their academic career. From October 2023 to July 2024, 30 scholarship holders, who are benefiting from the unique opportunity to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge, are trained at the Krystal study centre. In addition, six students have been able to modify their curriculum so that they can fulfil their dream of studying natural sciences.

Although temperatures are freezing outside and spring still seems far away, the summer semester of the 2023/2024 academic year has begun for more than 126 students from 40 different countries across six continents. Petra Landergott Kalvínská, head of the Prague study centre, greeted the students of Czech language courses at the Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies of Charles University.

Hundreds of tourists stream down the castle steps to Klárov every day after visiting the most beautiful gem of Prague architecture, the Prague Castle. And it is right there that they arrive at the new jewel - Zenger's transformation station, which after reconstruction has been converted into a new cultural venue known as Kunsthalle Praha. It is no wonder that it has become the destination of excursions for students of art and architecture and raised the interest of students of humanities at the Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies of Charles University.

At noon, the Emmaus abbey Na Slovanech rang with the tones of classical and modern music. On Thursday, 7 December, the 29th musical matinee of the Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies (ÚJOP UK) took place.The concert featured talented, both current and former students of the preparatory and language courses. As diverse as the multinational mix of the performers was, so too was their repertoire, which ranged from works by J. S. Bach to ABBA.

The Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies (ÚJOP UK) organized a one-time opportunity to visit two medical faculties in Prague for students of preparatory programmes focused on medicine and pharmacy. The students interested in these prestigious studies had a chance to see the life at the oldest medical faculty of Charles University and its younger sister in Motol.

The doors open day at the Ladislav Sutnar faculty of design and art of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen proved to be an unforgettable experience for the students of the Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies of Charles University (ÚJOP UK). On 10 November 2023, dozens of people interested in bachelor's, master's and doctoral studies flocked to the faculty. They did not miss the unique opportunity to take a look inside more than twenty art studios and get acquainted with the environment and background of the spaces where design and art are taught.

A sunny autumn Monday morning turned into a gloomy, drizzly afternoon when everyone would rather be holed up at home watching the rain from the window. The unexpected change in the weather, which according to all forecasts was supposed to be sunny all day on Monday, provided the perfect atmosphere for one of the most popular student events - the Halloween pumpkin carving competition and a fancy-dress party.

Almost twenty Japanese students of the Medicine and Pharmacy programme in English in Poděbrady had a unique opportunity to experience the atmosphere of a highly professional medical symposium. On October 2, the city of Poděbrady hosted the Czech-Japanese Surgical Symposium 2023, which took place in close proximity to the teaching facilities of Charles University in the Na Kovárně Theatre.

The extraordinary life stories of Soňa Zajícová and Anna Burchardt intertwined this year at the methodology course for teachers from expatriate communities. Although they have not lived in the Czech Republic for most of their lives, they share a love for the Czech language they teach and a strong affiliation with Czech culture.
