Easter holidays in Poděbrady: pomlázka (Easter whip), carolling and painted eggs

The Poděbrady study centre regularly observes Czech traditions, and so at Easter as well, the atmosphere of the classroom becomes festive. Our students experienced a program full of interesting activities and surprises that brought Czech culture closer to them.

Pomlázka, carolling and painted eggs

In the morning, a group of students rehearsed the traditional Easter carol Hody, hody do provody with their Czech teacher Jana Macurová and then went to other classrooms to surprise their schoolmates. The traditional carolling cannot do without the Easter whip and the well-deserved reward that the students received for their courage.

The afternoon programme was based in the auditorium of the centre, where these events are traditionally held. The students could get creative - on the tables were prepared templates with Easter motifs and various decorations such as ribbons, bobbles or small eggs, which the participants were supposed to use to decorate the boxes in which the Easter wheatgrass was planted. Each class was also given one large egg on which the students were to draw something representing their class, and they could also decorate nine small eggs according to their imagination. Those who wanted to could hang their decorated egg on a willow tree, which is another traditional Easter custom.

The students received a well-deserved sweet reward

After the creative part of the programme, the jury evaluated the most beautiful decoration. The decision was very difficult because all the students' decorations were very good, but in the end the decision was made:

1st place - big chocolate lamb won by class S1 (government scholarship holders)

2nd place - medium sugar lamb went to class S2 ( Ministry of Education scholarship holders)

3rd place - Easter Gingerbread Basket won by class C2 (Complex program)

"The biggest surprise, however, was the participation of students from the Krystal centre in Prague, who, along with class C3, received special prizes for their kind visit and involvement in the activities. I am glad that the students enjoyed our activities so much," says Ivana Štiková, the organizer of the successful celebrations.
