How to extend a student visa in Czechia

Scheduling an Appointment at the Department of Migration Policy (OAMP)

You have completed the UJOP foundation course, and your student visa is about to expire. It's time to apply for a long-term residence permit. This can be done 90 days before the expiry of a long-term visa (or a previously obtained long-term residence permit – the expiry date can always be found on the back of the pink card). The latest deadline for submitting an application is on the last working day before the expiry of the visa or previously obtained permissions. If this day falls on a weekend, non-reception day or holiday, then the application must be submitted no later than the last working day before the visa expires. In order not to stand in line for hours and days, you need to reserve the day of application in advance. Time is limited, so never postpone your reservation until the last day – then there will be no places, and you will have to stand in a live queue waiting for a lucky opportunity to apply.

There are two ways to sign up for an application - by phone and online.

The easiest way, especially if you are not sure of your Czech, is to sign up online on the https://ipc.gov.cz website, which has an English version.

Registration on the Website frs.gov.cz

The site can be switched to English. After the initial registration, you will be asked to fill in all the data at once. Do it. Everything is as usual: last name, first name, citizenship (Nationality), date of birth, passport number and expiration date of the passport.

You will also need to choose the area in which you live. It's important! Even if you already know that you will study in another city (i.e. move, for example, from Poděbrady to Prague or from Prague to Brno), you are still applying at your place of residence at the moment

After registering, click on Make an appointment and then go through the following points:

  1. Indicate how many people will be with you or you will come alone – you will come alone

  2. Select the purpose of the reservation: Application for a long-term residence permit for the purpose of studying.

  3. Select the date of your visit to OAMP.

  4. Choose a time.

After the end of the procedure, a PIN will appear on the screen, with which you will need to come at the appointed time. Check your email – this information should be sent there too.

Preparation of Documents

You must bring a set of the following documents to OAMP:

  1. Completed green application form

  2. International passport + pink (biometric) card (if you have one)

  3. Payment card to pay an administrative fee of CZK 2,500

  4. Foreigner's Insurance Contract

  5. Photo, 35 mm × 45 mm

  6. Information about the availability of money in the account, i.e. bank statement.

  7. Confirmation of Study / Letter of Acceptance

  8. Certified copy of the accommodation contract

Green Application Form

You can take a green application form at any OAMP office. Its first page looks like this. It can also be downloaded from this link:

Tiskopis žádosti o vydání a prodloužení doby platnosti povolení k dlouhodobému pobytu

  • You can fill out the form in the PDF editor or by hand.

  • If you are filling out the form by hand, then you need to use a blue pen.

  • THE APPLICATION IS FILLED OUT IN LEGIBLE HANDWRITING IN PRINTED LATIN (ENGLISH) LETTERS.

  • The application must be completed in advance, before your visit to the OAMP.

We will not explain the entire questionnaire - mostly there are standard questions. Let's dwell on just a few points that may raise questions.

Heading. If you are applying for dlouhodobý pobyt for the first time, you must put a cross in the second box (O povolení k dlouhodobému pobytu). If you are renewing the permit, you must put a cross in the third box (O prodloužení doby...).

Point No 3. If you changed your last name, then write down your past surnames.

Point No 8. Country of birth – enter the three letters as indicated on the back page of the application form. You can also see the Country codes on the website of the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic

Point No 10. Citizenship / Nationality is also indicated in three letters.

Point No 11. Write you highest degree (STŘEDNÍ VZDĚLÁNÍ, BAKALÁŘ, MAGISTER, etc.)

Point No 12 – write STUDENT or STUDENTKA

You can leave point No 13 blank.

Point No 14. In the Zaměstnavatel section, write the name of your FUTURE university and faculty, and in the Pracovní zařazení section, write "STUDENT/KA". You don't have to fill in anything else here.

Point No. 15. Purpose of stay – write “STUDIUM”.

Point No 17. If you are extending it for the first time, then write the date of entry into the country and the expiration date of the visa. If this is not the first time you extend a long-term residence permit, then you need to write here the date from which the previous permit was issued to you.

Point No18. A very important point is that here you need to write the address where you live, the one for which you have an accommodation contract. And although according to the new rules, the address of residence should no longer be indicated on the residence permit card, still enter the correct address.

Point No20. Date of entry into the Czech Republic – look for the stamp in your passport.

Point No28. Write your phone number and email address legibly.

Point No29. Write the city in which you filled out the application form (e.g. Prague), the date and sign.

Payment card

The administrative fee for the application is 2,500 CZK. The most convenient way is to pay by card on the spot.

Health Insurance Contract

The insurance must be issued for 12 months, that is, fully cover the validity of the new residence permit: from September 1 of the current year to August 31 of next year.

A foreigner's insurance contract must be issued by an insurance company. To find one, please google "zdravotní pojištění studentů cizinců". Choose a few companies and fill out their online insurance calculators. Usually, they all have pages in several languages, so you won't have any problems filling it out. Having received your data, they will find you themselves and shower you with offers with discounts and bonuses. You will only have to choose one and pay.

Proof of Funds

If you will use a Czech bank account to prove your funds, then you need to take Výpis z účtu. You need to require not just Výpis z účtu, but with a seal (s razítkem) for OAMP. The issuance of such a certificate is a paid service, but you need to use it. The certificate that you downloaded on the Internet banking or banking application is not valid.

If you still do not have an account in the Czech Republic and are going to make a bank statement in your home country, do not forget to order its judicial translation into Czech (soudní překlad).

Confirmation of Study

You have successfully passed the entrance exams, which means that you can enroll as a student (zápis ke studiu) and receive a confirmation of your studies at your faculty. If you have not yet enrolled as a student and cannot take proof of study, then see What should be done if you do not have all the necessary documents? below.

Let's say you have enrolled as a student and can get confirmation of your studies at your faculty.

You need at least two confirmations – one you will give when submitting documents for the residence permit, and the second you will need to check into a student dormitory. Better yet, take four of them – there can never be too many confirmations. You never know, what if you get a part-time job (brigádu), you will be asked to provide your study confirmation.

Accommodation Contract

In theory, the accommodation contract should fully cover the time of your stay in the Czech Republic in terms of dates. However, university dormitories are often inhabited not from September 1, but from mid-September. In addition, the contract is often issued only for the academic year, that is, until the end of June. What should you do?

  • If you are not moving into the new dormitory from 1 September, you must bring two accommodation contracts – the one expiring (e.g. before 15 September) and the new one (from 15 September) – so that their dates fully cover the time spent in the Czech Republic. For a contract covering the period from September 1 to September 15, please contact the UJOP curators.

  • If the accommodation contract is issued for an academic year, i.e. 9-10 months until the end of June, then usually no one makes a problem out of it. So, neither do you. Everyone understands that you are going to extend your stay in the dormitory later.

An important point is that all the documents that you give will not be returned to you. This means that if you need the original accommodation contract (and you do), make a copy of it certified by Czech Point beforehand.

What should be done if you do not have all the necessary documents?

So, let's remember once again that you must bring a set of the following documents to OAMP:

  1. Completed green application form.

  2. International passport + pink (biometric) card (if you have one)

  3. Payment card to pay an administrative fee of CZK 2,500

  4. Foreigner health insurance contract.

  5. Photo, 35 mm × 45 mm.

  6. Information about the availability of money in the account, i.e. bank statement

  7. Confirmation of Study / Letter of Acceptance

  8. Certified copy of the accommodation contract

What to do if some documents are missing? Let's say you recollected that you have an appointment at OAMP a couple of hours before your scheduled time. You cannot fail to appear on the day and hour you have chosen. This is punishable by a fine and other sanctions. Therefore, you are obliged to come with at least what is listed in the first three items of our list, i.e. a green application form, a passport with a visa/biometric card, and a payment card. Everyone will be dissatisfied with your behavior, but you are generally saved. If you apply on the last day of your visa, you must also have a foreigner's insurance contract.

For everything that you do not bring, you will be issued a výzva, which will list all the missing documents and indicate the lhůta, that is, the period in which you must bring these documents or send them by post.

Most often, students have to send confirmation of study and accommodation contract, because many faculties simply will not issue them before mid-September. OAMP employees are aware of this and prescribe a sufficient period – lhůta.

Application submission

Check what address you need to go to – it is indicated in the email you received with the PIN code. For all students in Prague, the address of the OAMP department is the same: Hládkov 682/9, Prague 6.

You must arrive at least 30 minutes before the appointed time, at the latest - 15 minutes.

Inside, you will see a waiting room and a terminal.

On this terminal, you need to select a language, for example, English.

And on the screen that appears, select the top button (in case you book an appointment online).

Then enter the PIN

And get your number in the waiting line.

The good thing about the Hládkov branch is that if you sit in the corner by the window, there is a chance to connect to the Eduroam wi-fi there. So, you can kill time surfing the Internet while waiting for your turn.

When your number and the number of the window light up on the electronic queue board, feel free to go to submit documents. Usually, OAMP employees speak English, but don't be afraid to speak Czech, you won't be asked anything complicated.

If your time has come, but your name does not appear on the board, feel free to enter the room with windows, wait for the first vacant employee and report your problem. Don't panic. This is rare, but still, it can happen.

If all the documents that we have mentioned are in order, you will be given confirmation that your documents have been accepted. That’s it, you can bid farewell to the Foreigners’ Affairs department with a „Na shledanou! “. Now, you need to wait for your documents to be processed. You may often have to wait quite a long time for a decision – but don’t worry.

Signing up for biometrics

You can check whether your documents have been processed or not on the website https://ipc.gov.cz/informace-o-stavu-rizeni/.The confirmation given to you by OAMP will have an OAM number at the top, below the address.

It is the number you need to enter on the website to find out whether you have obtained a residence permit or not.

If you discover that your application has been approved, you can call 974 801 801 yourself and request a convenient appointment time. If you do not call, OAMP staff will contact you – do not be alarmed if you receive a call from a private / hidden number. During the call, you will arrange the appointment date, and on the agreed-upon day, you will return to OAMP to have your biometrics taken.

Soon after, you will receive a pink card allowing you to stay in the Czech Republic for another year.
