ABOUT THE COURSE

Practical English for Academic Staff - Week in the Heart of Europe

 

  • Are you able to cope with English but wish to further polish your skills?
  • Do you use English regularly in your academic work but wish to express yourself more confidently and naturally?
  • Would you like to strengthen your ability to teach, write, and collaborate in English while experiencing the vibrant academic and cultural life of Prague?

This immersive course is designed for university lecturers, researchers, and other academic professionals who wish to use English more effectively in their professional careers. Participants will enhance their fluency and accuracy in both spoken and written English, expand their academic vocabulary, and increase their confidence in communicating with international colleagues and students.

 

Through interactive sessions, discussions, and task-based activities, participants will practise key skills such as academic writing, delivering presentations, teaching in English, and participating in academic meetings and conferences.

WHO IS IT FOR?

This course is intended for academic staff with intermediate, upper-intermediate and advanced English proficiency, who wish to activate and refine their existing knowledge of English in both receptive and productive skills. It is particularly suitable for those seeking to gain confidence in international academic and research settings, and to strengthen their language skills for teaching, publishing, and collaboration.

  • Group B - B1 level (CEFR)
  • Group C - A2 level (CEFR)

 

Minimum Level of English: A2 (CEFR)

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will have:

  • improved their fluency and confidence in spoken and written academic English,
  • broadened their range of academic and discipline-specific vocabulary,
  • refined their presentation and lecturing skills,
  • developed greater accuracy and formality in academic writing,
  • enhanced their ability to communicate effectively in international academic settings.

COURSE CONTENT

  • Course duration: 30 training hours of in-class lessons and excursions

Classes are organised in small groups (10–15 participants) to ensure an interactive and supportive learning environment. Sessions include academic role-plays, task-based learning, peer discussions, and personalised feedback from experienced instructors.

 

In-class sessions include:

  • Academic English Grammar in Practice
  • Vocabulary for the Academic Environment
  • Intercultural Communication in Higher Education
  • Formal Language in Academic Writing
  • Writing and Responding to Academic Emails
  • Presentation and Public Speaking Skills
  • Academic Meetings and Conferences

Excursions (four to be selected for the Mon - Thu schedule):

  • Walking tour of Prague’s historical centre (Old Town and New Town) with its numerous sights and unforgettable atmosphere
  • Walking tour of Prague Castle, including St Vitus Cathedral and other sights
  • Guided visit to the Old Town Hall
  • Guided visit to a brewery with beer tasting
  • Charles Bridge museum and a boat trip on the Vltava river
  • Guided visit to the historical seat of Charles University

All excursions listed above are included in the course fee.

LOCATION

Our in-person courses take place in Voršilská street in the centre of Prague, a five-minute walk from the Národní třída metro stop.

 

We do not provide accommodation for this course. If you are interested in accommodation in the student dormitories of Charles University, please contact Dormitories and Refectories. We cannot guarantee free capacity during the course.
