Visit to One of the Oldest Breweries in the Czech Republic

Students from the humanities programmes at UJOP visited one of Prague’s oldest and most famous breweries – U Fleků. For many of them, it was an opportunity not only to experience traditional Czech beer culture but also to learn about the history of one of the oldest and smallest breweries in the Czech Republic, which also operates the largest pub in the country.

The tour began in the lager cellar, where the students were introduced to the history of the brewery and its unique place in Czech tradition. The guide spoke about the brewery’s founding in 1499, highlighted the major historical events it has experienced, and explained why it has become a symbol of Czech brewing. This was followed by a short film exploring in greater detail the origins of the brewery, traditional brewing methods, and the history of its dark lager.

The next stop was the brewhouse, where the students saw the copper cooling vats and fermentation tanks used in the traditional brewing process, as well as old wooden beams that are even older than the brewery itself. The guide explained the technical aspects of brewing and the importance of copper equipment in the production process.

The excursion also included a visit to the restaurant’s historic interiors, including the richly decorated Knights’ Hall, which has preserved elements of its original furnishings. This allowed the students to appreciate not only the technical and historical aspects of the brewery, but also its unique atmosphere, which combines tradition, culture, and contemporary life in Prague. Overall, the excursion offered an engaging insight into how historical practices and architecture continue to shape Czech beer culture today.
