Excursion to the National Theatre

Students from the humanities programmes at UJOP spent the morning touring the National Theatre, where they had the opportunity to explore its architecture, interiors, and historical details reflecting Prague’s rich cultural heritage.

The tour began in the grand foyer, where the guide introduced the students to the history of the theatre, from its founding through the fires and subsequent reconstructions to its modernisation. This gave the students an overview of the building’s complex development and the key moments in Czech cultural history associated with it. They then moved to the upper outdoor terrace, from which they enjoyed panoramic views of Prague and were able to compare the city’s historical and contemporary urban landscape. The next part of the tour took them into the main auditorium, where the students observed the layout of the seating area, the stage, and other technical features that shape theatrical performances.

The excursion continued into the theatre’s basement, where the students viewed the foundation stones of the building as well as miniature models of the National Theatre illustrating its original appearance and construction methods. This part of the tour helped them gain a deeper understanding of the architectural principles and historical development of the building.

Overall, the visit provided the students with a deeper insight into the historical and cultural significance of the National Theatre. It demonstrated the connection between history, architecture, and art, and helped the students better understand the cultural traditions that have shaped contemporary Czech culture.
