Breakdown of subjects in the programme

Breakdown of subjects

All subjects are taught in Czech. At first, teachers use language with basic vocabulary and grammar. As students’ Czech proficiency improves, the language of instruction becomes more complex and increasingly aligned with university-level expectations.

Academic year structure

  • The programme starts in September.
  • Lessons take place every weekday from 8:30 to 15:30.
  • Students have 7 lessons per day, 35 lessons per week, 1,250 lessons in total.
  • One lesson equals one academic hour (45 minutes)
  • Lessons include lectures, seminars, projects, and regular tests.
  • Students are expected to complete 10 hours of self-study per week, including homework, listening to Czech podcasts or radio, watching TV or films, reading, and speaking Czech.
  • Weeks 1-2: intensive Czech language lessons + an adaptation programme.
  • From week 3: Czech language lessons + academic subjects.
  • The academic year is divided into 3 trimesters.
    • Each trimester has a different weekly timetable.

„The most important aspect of studying my subject is to perceive the individual in their wholeness and dignity; empathy and respecting the autonomy of oneself and others; engaging in productive dialogue, moving away from frustrated monologues. My life motto: Get comfortable being uncomfortable. Stop arguing with reality. Get on with it.“

Mgr. Marika Constable

I teach English with a specialization in medical ethics. I have been studying historical connotations on the develpomnet of ethical codes in medicine for 30 years. My focus is on testimonial and hermeneutic injustice in the relationship between doctor-patient and individual-society. I have written scripts - "Basic Introduction to Bioethics and Medical Ethics." and I am also the head of the Summer Course for Czech Expatriates.

I have been working at UJOP Charles University since 2011.

Czech language outcomes

At the end of the programme, you will take a Czech language exam. Successful students will receive a certificate recognized by more than 80 faculties.

This programme is designed to help you reach levels B1 or B2 in Czech (depending on your progress and effort). For highly motivated students who need advanced medical language for their target faculty, an individually arranged Medical Czech exam (up to C1 level) is available at UJOP as an additional option and typically requires consistent independent study.

If Czech is linguistically distant from your native language (non-Slavic), you may benefit from a two-year plan:

LOCATION

Prague-Krystal is a mini-campus – with both school and accommodation in one place! You’ll have everything you need in one location: modern classrooms equipped with data projectors and interactive whiteboards, comfortable accommodation in double en-suite bedrooms, and a school restaurant. The city centre and the airport are about 15 minutes away by public transport. Nearby, you’ll find a nature reserve Divoká Šárka as well as Charles University’s sports and recreation area.

A budget-friendly accommodation alternative, the Prague-Hostivař Dormitory is available, located about an hour away from the study centre by tram.

STUDENT LIFE

Student life at UJOP Charles University goes beyond classes, textbooks, and exams. It’s also about making new friends, excursions, weekends, holidays, and enjoying plenty of fun activities. Explore the overview of the academic year at UJOP and watch video testimonials from our students and alumni. Let our photos and videos show you more than words can.
